Villa Maria School’s Life Skills program is designed to help students build the practical, social, emotional, and vocational skills needed to navigate everyday life with greater confidence and independence. Middle School and High School students are given opportunities to apply what they are learning through hands-on experiences and real-world environments that help prepare them for life beyond the classroom.

Throughout the program, social-emotional support, executive functioning development, communication skills, and self-advocacy are thoughtfully integrated into daily learning. Students are encouraged to develop greater independence while strengthening organization, flexibility, problem-solving, responsibility, communication, and interpersonal skills in meaningful and supportive settings.
A key component of the program is real-world learning and community engagement. Students participate in volunteer opportunities within community organizations where they practice vocational skills, executive functioning, collaboration, communication, and workplace social pragmatics. These experiences help students build confidence, competence, and familiarity with real-life responsibilities and expectations.
Beginning in 9th grade, students visit local organizations for “service learning.” These outings provide an opportunity for students to practice important vocational and social pragmatic skills in real world settings with the support of Villa staff.
By 11th grade, students are encouraged to further explore personal interests and future pathways through internship opportunities. These experiences provide valuable exposure to workplace environments while helping students identify strengths, interests, and potential next steps for adulthood.

Person Centered Planning begins in the 8th grade, and in 10th grade, students and families work closely with a transition counselor to identify appropriate post-graduation programs, explore future opportunities, navigate application processes, and determine eligibility for important support services.
