At Villa Maria School, our arts and movement programs are thoughtfully designed to support neurodiverse learners through visual art, music, drama, and physical education experiences tailored to each child’s strengths and developmental needs. For many students with learning differences, ADHD, dyslexia, autism spectrum profiles, anxiety, executive functioning challenges, or sensory processing needs, creative expression can be a powerful pathway toward growth and self-confidence. Through supportive, hands-on experiences, students are encouraged to explore their individuality while strengthening collaboration, flexibility, communication, and social-emotional development. Villa’s integrated approach recognizes that arts and movement are not just “extracurriculars,” but essential components of helping students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

visual art
Villa seeks to foster a lifelong appreciation for the visual arts through hands-on exploration across a wide range of artistic media and techniques and exposure to art history and contemporary artwork. Students are encouraged to experiment creatively while developing confidence, self-expression, and technical skills through experiences including painting, sketching, collage, ceramics, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and opportunities for personal choices and artistic freedom.

Art at Villa is viewed not only as a creative outlet, but also as an important pathway for communication, emotional expression, problem-solving, and personal growth. Themes of gratitude, unity, kindness, empathy, and community embedded in the Villa Commitment are incorporated into expressive works through words, symbols and color. Through artistic projects, students deepen their understanding of academic concepts while developing critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. Students are involved in many collaborative artworks throughout the year and their artwork is proudly displayed around the school, helping to fill our community with creativity, individuality, and joy.

music
Music is often described as a universal language, a bridge between verbal and non-verbal expression that allows students to connect, communicate, and create in meaningful ways. At Villa, we believe every student can learn to appreciate, experience, and participate in music. Our music program supports creativity, self-expression, self-discipline, higher-order thinking, collaboration, and perceptual motor development through a wide range of engaging and developmentally supportive musical experiences. Students are encouraged to explore rhythm, sound, movement, composition, listening, and performance in ways that build both confidence and joy. Using both pitched and non-pitched instruments, students develop a sense of rhythm and timing, play simple melodies and chords, and learn to listen to one another while working together to perform music as an ensemble.

Elementary School students experience music through storytelling, movement-based learning, hands-on activities, songs, games, and interactive exploration that supports sensory engagement and social connection.
Middle School students expand upon these foundations through project-based learning experiences including composing original pieces using digital audio workstations, creating lyrical parodies and jingles, and researching composers, musicians, and musical traditions from around the world.
High School students can choose from a variety of instrumental electives including Introduction to Guitar, Ukulele, Percussion, and Keyboarding. Their curriculum also incorporates a life-based approach, giving students opportunities to explore careers in the music industry while learning about the history and influence of different music genres.

drama
Drama is a powerful form of expression that allows students to explore identity, emotion, and storytelling. Our drama program fosters confidence, communication skills, and empathy through engaging theatrical experiences in a supportive and inclusive environment that values risk-taking and creative expression. Our program meets twice a week after-school and culminates in a public performance. This gives students the opportunity to take part in a shared creative process and bring a show to life from rehearsal to final performance.

Through playing a character, students can safely explore emotions, perspectives, and social situations while practicing flexible thinking and self-expression. The program also supports public speaking skills, helping students develop clearer speech, stronger voice projection, and increased confidence when speaking in front of others. Students memorize lines, songs, and dances that support memory and sequencing skills, recall, and focus.

physical education
Villa Maria School’s PE program focuses on building teamwork and cooperation through a wide range of engaging individual and group-based activities. Villa’s supportive and inclusive environment encourages students to develop sportsmanship, build body awareness and coordination, and strengthen their overall health and wellness. PE Units may include basketball, yoga, cross-training exercises, soccer and footskills, obstacle course challenges, agility training, and full-body strength and movement development.

Through these experiences, students not only build physical fitness, but also develop important social-emotional skills including collaboration, perseverance, flexibility, and self-confidence. Students attend PE class every other day. For many students, physical movement also plays an important role in supporting focus, sensory regulation, emotional well-being, and overall readiness for learning throughout the school day. Our goal is to help students experience movement as something positive, empowering, and enjoyable, while encouraging lifelong wellness and active participation.
